Specials

At St. Ann, Specials provide students with opportunities to grow and learn beyond the core curriculum. Programs in Virtues, Art, Music, Spanish, STEM, library, and physical education help students develop creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of learning. Specials are designed to complement academic instruction while encouraging students to explore their interests, build new skills, and become well-rounded learners.

Library

Our library program provides students with engaging lessons and independent reading opportunities:

All Grades: Learn library skills and explore different genres, including:
- Call numbers and the Dewey Decimal System

Grades K–5: Lesson plus time to check out books and read independently

PreK/TK: Dedicated independent reading time

Grades 4–5: Develop research skills in preparation for middle school
- Learn to use World Book Online Encyclopedia as a research resource

Art

At St. Ann Catholic School, our Art program emphasizes creativity, skill-building, and appreciation of the arts:

Skill Development: Students learn real art techniques, including:
- Combining shapes to create objects
- Mixing paint colors
- Drawing and painting original work
Art History: All grades (PK–5) explore famous artists such as Henri Rousseau
Hands-On Projects:
- After Christmas: Clay projects, fired and glazed in our on-site kiln
- Spring: Fiber arts, including weaving and stitching

Art Show: Every student’s work is displayed during Catholic Schools Week, celebrating creativity and growth throughout the year.

Music & Performing Arts

At St. Ann Catholic School, students develop musical skills and a love of the arts through engaging classes and extracurricular opportunities:

Grades PK–5: Weekly music classes

Skill Development:
- Learn rhythm, melody, and basic music theory
- Explore singing, playing instruments, and movement activities

Performance Opportunities:
- Seasonal concerts and school performances
- Celebrate holidays and special events through music
- Annual Talent Show: All can enter - Top 12 acts selected to perform

Extracurriculars:
- Band (Grades 3–5): Instrumental instruction and performances
- Drama Club: School plays in the Fall and Spring
- Choir Club: Lead songs at weekly Mass and perform at special events

Music Appreciation: Learn about famous composers and a variety of musical genres

Physical Education (PE)

At St. Ann Catholic School, we recognize that physical activity is essential to children’s growth and development, just as much as academics.

Frequency:
- Grades K–5: PE twice a week
- PreK/TK: PE once a week

Skill Development:
- Teamwork and cooperation
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution
- Team building, health, and fitness

Extracurricular Opportunities: Interfaith Basketball League (Grades 3–5): Parent-coached teams

Spanish

At St. Ann Catholic School, all students participate in Spanish instruction:

Frequency:
- PreK/TK: every other week
- K–5: once a week

Cultural Learning:
- Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
- Explore Spanish-speaking countries

Faith Integration:
- Rosary Club honors Our Lady of Guadalupe with prayers in Spanish
- December Spanish novena to the Divine Infant Jesus for all students

Field Experience:
- One class visits the Mint Museum to study a Hispanic artist

STEM

At St. Ann Catholic School, our STEM program invites students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through playful, hands-on experiences rooted in a Catholic worldview that honors both faith and reason. We believe that curiosity and creativity flourish through play, which serves as a vital tool for discovery and growth. By integrating the natural world into our learning, we nurture a sense of wonder, responsibility, and care for creation. Our mission is to develop not only innovative thinkers, but also ethical leaders who embrace personal responsibility and stewardship of the Earth and all inhabitants, in light of their faith.

Engineering & Design:
- Students use the Engineering Design Process to design, build, and evaluate projects
- Examples include marshmallow-and-spaghetti towers and a kindergartener-built mobile pendulum wrecking ball

Environmental & Life Sciences:
- Study native pollinator plants, focusing on Milkweed and Monarch butterflies
- Plan and plant classroom and production gardens
- Future project: Student-led Farmers Market

Animal & Earth Science:
- Review animal classification systems and vertebrate benefit
- Study insects, food chains, weather impacts, and coastal conservation

Mathematical Thinking:
- Complete Math Super Star worksheets emphasizing problem-solving, strategy, and effort
- Hands-on manipulative stations integrated with the Engineering Design Process\

Physical & Chemical Science:
- Upcoming lessons on States of Matter and chemical reactions

Early Learners (PreK/TK):
- Engaged through playful, sensory-rich activities like bug poetry, ant dances, and exploring underwater whale sounds

Virtues

Confession

At St. Ann Catholic School, we nurture students’ faith, character, and discipleship through daily practice, sacraments, and a dedicated Education in Virtue program:

Education in Virtue:
- Weekly Virtuous Leadership class for PreK–5th grade
- Focus on one of 27 virtues each month in a three-year cycle
- Students learn about the lives of saints who exemplify each virtue
- Encourages students to learn, teach, and practice virtue in daily life
- Based on the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas and resources from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist
- Helps students grow as disciples of Christ and strive to be more like Jesus

Formation of Disciples:
- Students internalize the language of virtue and act as followers of Christ
- Encourages students to be recognized as living disciples in their everyday lives
- Daily Faith Practices:
- Gospel reflection and prayer every morning and afternoon

Sacramental Life:
- Weekly Mass and Adoration
- Quarterly Confession for Grades 3–5
- 2nd Grade preparation for Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion
- Students participate in religion classes, Mass, and May celebration

Prayer & Devotions:
- Rosary Club and annual Living Rosary in October
- Traveling Mary devotion
- Living Stations of the Cross during Lent
- May Crowning celebration
